Nigeria Super Eagles produced a scintillating performance on Saturday, November 12 as they defeated Algeria 3-1 in a 2018 Russia World Cup qualifying game, played in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom state.
With the win, the Super Eagles have put themselves in fine position in their CAF qualifying Group B as they have recorded maximum six points after two games played.
Algeria went into the game with high spirit and expectation, but they were toothless in the encounter as the Super Eagles mesmerized them completely in Uyo.
Here we look at five things that helped the Super Eagles win their match against the Algerians.
In any field, the best way to get good and superb result is good motivation and these was exemplified by Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who visited the team’s training session and assured them that the government are behind them.
Another strong motivation that the Super Eagles got ahead of this duel was when the Akwa Ibom state Governor Udom Emmanuel made a pledge that the Eagles will be given the sum of 10,000 dollars for any goal scored
The Super Eagles have failed to qualify for two editions of the African Cup of Nations in which many of their fans are still livid. Eagles have however vowed to redeem themselves by qualifying for the 2018 Russia World Cup since they will not take part in the 2017 African Cup of Nations in Gabon.
3. Victor Moses’ performance
The superb performance of Victor Moses against Algeria received a lot of appreciation from fans and pundits as his numerous flurry of attacks made life difficult for Algeria defenders who had no answer to his runs.
Moses opened scoring in the 25th minutes before scoring his second goal at the death.
4. Absolute control of the midfield
Chelsea player John Obi Mikel combined well with Ogenyi Onazi and Etebo, and their superb combination in the midfield really helped the Super Eagles to win the the match as it allowed Victor Moses to operates freely in the wing.
Mikel who has not played a game this season for Chelsea scored the second goal in the 42nd minute, and the goal was his 5th goal for the Super Eagles in 76 appearances.
5. Superb combination
The combination of Arsenal striker Alex Iwobi and Manchester City’s forward Kelechi Iheanacho has been regarded as a blessing for Nigeria, and the two players were impressive again for the Super Eagles although they were unable to score.
